5 Essential Bridal Room Tips Every Bride Should Know

From a Wedding Photographer in Cape Town

After photographing weddings all over Cape Town, Stellenbosch, and across South Africa, I can tell you one thing with absolute certainty: the bridal room can either be peaceful… or absolute chaos. And the difference between the two usually comes down to a handful of small but powerful habits.

In my two-part video series (which you’ll find embedded below), I shared five simple, practical tips that make your bridal prep smoother, calmer, and a whole lot more photogenic. Here they are — all in one place.

1. Give Every Bridesmaid a Specific Responsibility

Your bridesmaids love you — but on wedding mornings, they often don’t know what to do to actually help.
So give each person a clear, simple task:

One handles drinks

One manages snacks

One is in charge of communicating with service providers

One helps with clothing

One is responsible for keeping the room tidy

This one step instantly reduces stress and stops the “Where is this?” and “Who must do that?” panic.

As a wedding photographer Cape Town, I’ve seen bridal rooms run like a well-oiled machine… and others run like a rugby scrum. Trust me — clear roles make all the difference.

2. Put All Your Accessories Together in One Spot

Your photographer and videographer are there to create beautiful visual memories — not to play “Where’s Wally?” with your earrings.

Place all accessories in ONE ready-to-shoot spot:

  • Rings

  • Jewellery

  • Shoes

  • Perfume

  • Invitations

  • Bridal details

You’re paying good money for us, so the last thing you want is your visual team wasting 20 minutes searching under beds and inside handbags.

This small prep step gives you more photos in less time — and less chaos

3. Don’t Wear Tight Underwear or Socks

This one is surprisingly important.

Tight underwear, bra straps, or socks will leave red marks and indents on your skin that show up clearly during portraits — especially when:

  • Shoulders are exposed

  • Back is open

  • You’re wearing a fitted dress

  • You’re barefoot for the “getting ready” moments

As a wedding photographer Stellenbosch, I’ve had to Photoshop out many of these lines — and trust me, prevention is 100x easier than correction.

Choose something comfortable and loose for the morning.

4. Remember to Eat, Drink Water… and Feed Your Makeup Artist

Wedding mornings can feel rushed, and brides often forget to eat or hydrate — until the moment they suddenly feel faint.

Drink enough water and have light snacks available.
You want steady energy, not a shaky walk down the aisle.

And here’s something most people don’t think about:

👉 Feed your makeup artist.

She’s likely been working for 5–6 hours straight, often without a break. A hydrated, fed makeup artist = a calm, steady, focused makeup artist. Everybody wins.

5. Wear Clothing That Opens in the Front

While getting your hair and makeup done, wear something that:

  • Buttons in the front

  • Zips in the front

  • Or simply clips open

This avoids having to pull a shirt over your freshly styled hair or smudge your makeup by squeezing through a neckline.

It keeps you looking flawless — and saves your hairstylist from a small heart attack.
