Makeup has been used for thousands of years to enhance the appearance and beautify the face. The history of makeup can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where both men and women used various products to color their skin, protect it from the sun, and accentuate their features.
In ancient Egypt, for example, makeup was a common part of daily life for both men and women. Egyptians used kohl, a type of eye makeup made from crushed antimony, to protect their eyes from the sun and enhance their appearance. They also used red ochre and henna to color their lips and cheeks.
In ancient Greece, makeup was primarily worn by women and was associated with high status and wealth. Greek women used white lead powder to lighten their skin and darken their eyebrows, and also applied red and pink pigments to their lips and cheeks.
During the Middle Ages, makeup fell out of favor in Europe, as it was seen as sinful and associated with prostitution. However, in the Renaissance, makeup began to make a comeback, with both men and women using cosmetics to enhance their appearance.
