10 more Wedding Tips: CEremony

The ceremony is the heart of the whole day — the reason everyone has gathered. It is also the part you can shape most easily for beautiful, unobtrusive photographs. Here is what I have learned over 500-plus ceremonies.

Ask about the rules early

Every officiant and venue is different. Some let me move freely, others prefer I stay at the back, and a few do not allow flash or photos of the register signing. Find out exactly what yours allows and let me know — nothing is worse than preparing for one situation and being surprised in the moment. Whatever the rules, I work quietly and respectfully.

Consider an unplugged ceremony

A gentle line on your programme, or a word from the officiant — “please put phones away and be present with us” — makes a real difference. It keeps a forest of glowing screens and outstretched arms out of your aisle shots, and it means your guests actually watch you marry. You will see the difference in your photos.
