Winter Family shoot in Franschhoek
Winter in the Cape Winelands has a charm all of its own. The vineyards turn rich shades of gold and rust, the mountains feel dramatic beneath soft cloud cover, and the air carries a calm stillness that makes it perfect for a relaxed family session.
Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing a lovely family of four on a beautiful wine farm in Franschhoek. They had flown in to enjoy a weekend in the Winelands and decided to make the most of their visit by booking a family photo session — something I always recommend when families are travelling together.
Although the weather was overcast, it worked beautifully in our favour. Soft winter light is incredibly flattering and creates a timeless, elegant feel. The muted seasonal colours of the vineyards provided a stunning natural backdrop that complemented the family perfectly.
Their two daughters were full of personality and laughter, and the entire family brought such a positive, relaxed energy to the session. We focused on creating authentic moments — walking between the vines, sharing jokes, cuddling close to keep warm. Those candid interactions are often the images families treasure most.
As a family photographer based in Cape Town, I love capturing the unique beauty of locations like Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. The Winelands offer a refined yet natural setting that works beautifully for families wanting something a little different from the beach.
This session was a wonderful reminder that you don’t need perfect sunshine for perfect memories — sometimes winter creates the most magical atmosphere of all.
