Capturing Family Joy on the Garden Route
December on the Garden Route is truly magical. Coastal towns fill with holidaymakers, beaches buzz with energy, and families from around the world gather to celebrate the festive season together.
I recently had the pleasure of photographing a large, multi-generational family during their December holiday — from grandparents to parents and energetic kids. There’s something incredibly special about capturing three generations in one frame. The relaxed holiday atmosphere, sun-kissed skin, and genuine smiles created the perfect ingredients for a joyful and meaningful session.
The beach setting added to the magic. Barefoot walks along the shoreline, laughter echoing over the waves, and spontaneous moments in the ocean all contributed to a gallery filled with life and connection. December sessions have a unique feel — everyone is rested, present, and simply happy to be together.
Each year, I travel from Cape Town to Stilbaai and surrounding Garden Route towns during December, and it’s always a highlight of my season. As a family photographer, being invited into these holiday gatherings to document such special memories is something I never take for granted.
