Why Stellenbosch works for family photos
Stellenbosch is one of the most rewarding settings in the Western Cape for a family photo shoot. The town pairs dramatic mountains, oak-lined streets and working wine farms into a single golden-hour backdrop — a natural, unposed setting where families genuinely relax and the photos look like real life rather than a stiff studio sit-down.
Visitors from Europe and the UK in particular often specifically request Stellenbosch — it’s the South Africa they’ve seen in travel magazines and wine brochures, and they want to be inside that image, not just looking at it.
Works well for families who want the wine country aesthetic, couples with children who want something softer and more romantic, and anyone who’s had enough of beach scenes and wants something completely different.

Eden Forest
The signature spot — a quiet pine-and-gum forest just outside town where soft, filtered light falls between the trees all afternoon. Sheltered from the wind, easy for little legs, and gives that dreamy woodland feel without a long walk from the car. Our go-to for relaxed family sessions.
Jonkershoek Valley
Mountains, streams and fynbos for families who love the outdoors.
Dorp Street & the university oaks
Classic, leafy, timeless avenues in the heart of town.
Winelands estates
Farms such as Spier, Delaire Graff, Tokara and Lourensford offer lawns, vineyards and mountain views (estate shoots by prior arrangement).
Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden
Compact, green and ideal for younger children.
What to know
Best time of year & light
Autumn (March to May) is spectacular here, when the vineyards turn gold and red; spring (September to November) brings green vines and wildflowers. For light, late afternoon is ideal — we usually begin about two hours before sunset. Stellenbosch sits more sheltered from the south-easter than the Atlantic coast, so summer afternoons stay comfortable too.
Session length & meeting point
A typical family shoot runs around 1.5 to 2 hours, plenty of time to move between two nearby spots in and around town. Travel to Stellenbosch from my Durbanville base is included in your session. Meeting point on Google Maps →
Getting there
About 40 minutes from Cape Town by car. An Uber or rental car is the easiest option — there’s no direct public transport to the estate areas. Combine the shoot with a day in the Winelands and it becomes a proper outing.
What to wear
Richer tones work beautifully here — burgundy, mustard, forest green, warm terracotta. Earth tones in general. Avoid white against white Cape Dutch gables as the contrast washes out the detail.
