Wedding Tips: Confetti

Confetti is one of my favourite moments of the whole wedding day. It is loud, it is joyful, and it is over in about four seconds — which is exactly why it is worth getting right. After more than 500 weddings across the Cape winelands and Western Cape, here is everything I have learned about a confetti exit that actually photographs beautifully.

First, check what your venue allows

Before you order a single packet, ask your venue what they permit. Some estates only allow biodegradable petals or dried flowers, and a few do not allow anything that has to be swept off a lawn afterwards. It is the quickest thing to settle and it saves an awkward moment on the day. If you are still choosing where to celebrate, my Cape Town & Western Cape venue guide is a good place to start — I have photographed at most of them and know their little quirks.

Real petals beat paper, every time

Dried rose or hydrangea petals catch the light, drift down slowly, and look beautiful in photographs — paper confetti tends to fall flat and stick to everything. Buy a little more than you think you need, about a generous handful per guest, and hand it out just before the moment rather than an hour early when half of it ends up forgotten in handbags.

How we actually get the shot

The secret is simple: get your guests close. I line everyone up in two tight rows with just enough room for you to walk through, ask them to throw high rather than straight at you, and then — this is the trick — we usually do it twice. The first run is a happy scramble; the second is when everyone is laughing and the best frames happen. Walk slowly, hold hands, and look at each other, not at the camera.
