Sound familiar?

"We're terrible in front of the camera."

Most families say some version of this before every session. A family photoshoot isn’t two hours of everyone smiling at a lens — it’s walking, talking, playing, and letting real moments happen. I’ll get the classic shots you want, but the best ones usually happen in between. Kids don’t need to perform. You don’t need to know how to pose. That’s my job.

Twelve years

Twelve years teaches you when not to interfere.

Riekert Cloete Photography has completed 400+ family shoots, and the technical side is the easy part. The skill is knowing when to direct and when to let a real interaction unfold while still photographing it — when a toddler needs a break, when to move locations, when a moment shouldn’t be interrupted for a “better” one.

Choose your location

Cape Town has three very different vibes — pick the one that fits your family.

There are plenty of great spots around Cape Town, but if you’re visiting for the first time, these three are where I’d start. The look differs quite a bit between them, so it usually comes down to where you’re staying and the kind of photos you’re after — between the three, you’ve got real variety to choose from.

How much does a family photoshoot cost?

Most Riekert Cloete Photography family sessions are R4,650 for a 2-hour Standard Session, which covers almost everyone. That is enough time to photograph the whole family together, individual portraits, the children on their own and the relaxed in-between moments, without anyone feeling rushed. If you are based near Durbanville and only need a short session, there is also a 1-hour Mini Shoot from R2,950. Longer sessions of 4 to 8 hours are available for families who want more variety across the day, such as several locations or outfit changes. Every package includes all usable photos from the session, with no cap, no cutoff and no upgrade required, so the price you see is the price you pay. The full breakdown of sessions and rates is on the pricing page.

How long does a family session take?

Most family sessions are booked for up to 2 hours, which gives us enough time to photograph without rushing and to move between nearby spots when needed. That pace matters with children: it leaves room for warm-up frames, breaks, a change of mood and the unplanned moments that often turn into the favourite photographs. If you are based near Durbanville and a shorter session suits your family, the 1-hour Mini Shoot is also available. For families who want more variety, such as multiple locations, outfit changes or several generations photographed separately, Riekert Cloete Photography offers longer sessions of 4 to 8 hours. We settle the length together during your pre-session brief, so the time booked matches what you actually want from the day and nobody is watching the clock.

Where do you shoot family photos in Cape Town?

Wherever suits your family best. Riekert Cloete Photography shoots on the Atlantic Seaboard, in the Winelands, in the Southern Suburbs and on the West Coast at Bloubergstrand. Each area offers a different look: beaches and mountain backdrops on the coast, vineyards and oak-lined estates inland, and greener, more sheltered spots closer to the city. We choose the location together during your pre-session brief, taking into account the ages of your children, how far you are willing to travel, the season and the kind of photographs you picture on your wall. If you are visiting Cape Town from abroad, I can help you choose a location that fits your accommodation and your itinerary. You can also explore Cape Town photography locations on the site to see which backdrop appeals to you before we speak.

What should we wear for our family photoshoot?

Soft, coordinated tones work best. Think muted colours that sit well together rather than everyone matching exactly: for example, a mix of creams, soft blues, earthy neutrals or gentle greens. Avoid large logos, busy patterns and very bright neon colours, because they pull attention away from faces and date a photograph quickly. Comfortable clothes you can move in make a real difference with children, and they tend to produce more natural expressions than outfits that feel stiff or new. Riekert Cloete Photography will cover exactly what to wear, and what to avoid, before your shoot, so you are never left guessing on the morning. The family session preparation guide on the site goes into more detail, and you will find further answers on the FAQ page.

Do we get all the photos, or is there a cutoff?

Every Riekert Cloete Photography package includes all usable photos from the session: no cap, no cutoff and no upgrade required. There is no limit of 30 or 50 images, and no paid tier to unlock the rest of the gallery. If a frame is sharp, well exposed and shows your family at their best, it is edited and delivered. I do not keep a selection of favourites back to sell later. What is left out are the genuinely unusable frames, such as blinks, motion blur and test shots, because there is no value in sending you hundreds of near-duplicates to scroll through. The result is a complete gallery that tells the story of the session from beginning to end, ready to print, frame, share or turn into an album, with nothing more to buy.

How long until we get our photos?

Your gallery is delivered within 7 days of the session, via Google Drive. Riekert Cloete Photography sends a single download link, so you can save the full set of edited photographs to your phone or computer, and share the link with grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends who want copies too. Because delivery is by download link, it works the same whether your family lives in Cape Town or overseas, which matters for families visiting South Africa or relatives abroad who are waiting to see the photographs. Everything in the gallery has already been edited, so there is nothing further to do except choose your favourites for printing. If you have a specific deadline, such as a gift, a birthday or a card you want to send, mention it during your pre-session brief and we will plan around it.

Can we combine a maternity or matric shoot with our family session?

Yes. Maternity and matric farewell sessions are both offered separately, and many families book more than one milestone with Riekert Cloete Photography. A typical example is a maternity session in the months before the baby arrives, followed by a newborn shoot, and then a family session once everyone is settled. Families with a matriculant often combine the matric farewell with a family portrait, since the whole family is dressed up and together for the occasion. Each session is planned with its own pre-session brief, location and timing, so the photographs suit the milestone rather than being squeezed into a single outing. Returning families also find the children are far more relaxed, because they already know me. You can see each type of session here: Maternity · Matric farewell · Newborn shoots.
