Real Weddings — Cape Winelands Venues

Updated 27 October 2026

The Cape Winelands produce some of the most visually stunning wedding photography in the country. Between the rolling vineyards, mountain backdrops, and centuries-old Cape Dutch architecture, every venue offers something different — and after photographing weddings across Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Tulbagh, and beyond since 2004, I’ve seen how each estate creates its own atmosphere. Here are real weddings I’ve photographed at some of the Western Cape’s finest wine estates.

Nooitgedacht Wine Estate — Stellenbosch

Wedding ceremony at Nooitgedacht Wine Estate in Stellenbosch

Nooitgedacht sits in the Stellenbosch hills with views that stretch across the valley to the Helderberg Mountains. Chris and Christelle chose a summer ceremony on the estate’s lawns, where the late-afternoon light caught the vineyards behind them. The venue’s combination of open-air ceremony space and a warm, timber-framed reception hall made the transition from afternoon to evening seamless.

What makes Nooitgedacht special for photography is the variety: vineyard rows for couple portraits, mountain views from the ceremony lawn, and the intimate reception space with its warm lighting. The golden hour here — with the sun setting behind the mountains — is exceptional.

Montpellier de Tulbagh

Wedding at Montpellier de Tulbagh wine estate

Montpellier de Tulbagh is a hidden gem in the Tulbagh Valley, surrounded by the dramatic Witzenberg Mountains. The estate’s Cape Dutch manor house dates back to the 1700s, and the whitewashed walls and oak-lined avenue create a timeless setting that photographs beautifully in any season.

Tulbagh is about 90 minutes from Cape Town — far enough to feel like a destination, close enough for a day trip. The valley’s microclimate means warm, still evenings with dramatic mountain light. I’ve photographed several weddings here, and the consistency of the light and landscape makes it one of my favourite winelands venues.

Saronsberg — Tulbagh

Wedding at Saronsberg wine estate in Tulbagh

Saronsberg is where fine art meets fine wine. The venue combines a working wine cellar with a contemporary art gallery, giving it a modern edge that most winelands venues lack. The ceremony space overlooks the Tulbagh Valley, and the reception hall doubles as a gallery — making for an unusual and photogenic backdrop.

For couples who want a winelands wedding without the traditional Cape Dutch aesthetic, Saronsberg offers something genuinely different. The clean lines and contemporary art create strong compositional opportunities, and the Tulbagh sunsets from the terrace are as good as anywhere in the Western Cape.

Eureka Estate

Wedding reception at Eureka Estate wine farm

Eureka Estate is a working wine farm with an intimate wedding venue that feels personal rather than commercial. The ceremony garden, flanked by old oaks and mountain views, seats guests in a natural amphitheatre setting. The reception space is warm and rustic — exposed brick, wooden beams, and soft lighting.

What I love about Eureka is its scale. It’s not a massive venue trying to be everything to everyone. It’s a family-run estate that hosts a limited number of weddings, and that intimacy shows in the photography. Couples relax here, and relaxed couples produce better images.

De Uijlenes — Overberg

De Uijlenes sits among the milkwood trees of the Overberg, about two hours from Cape Town. The venue is built into the natural landscape — stone walls, wooden decks, and a ceremony clearing that feels like a forest chapel. Jolanda and Jurgens chose it for the atmosphere, and the photographs reflect that choice: dappled light through the trees, the couple framed by ancient milkwood branches, and an evening reception lit by lanterns and candles.

De Uijlenes is one of the more challenging venues to photograph — the forest canopy creates mixed light and deep shadows — but the results are worth the effort. The natural setting produces images with a mood and texture that no wine estate can replicate.

Mosaic Private Sanctuary — Franschhoek

Mosaic Private Sanctuary overlooks the Franschhoek Valley from a hillside above the town. It’s an exclusive-use venue, meaning the couple and their guests have the entire property for the weekend. Alfred and Hanrie’s wedding here was intimate and relaxed — the kind of celebration that happens when nobody is watching the clock.

The Franschhoek Valley light is different from Stellenbosch or Tulbagh. It’s softer, filtered by the surrounding mountains, and it lingers longer in the evening. The hillside position gives panoramic views across the vineyards, making it one of the most photogenic locations in the winelands.

The Stellenbosch Landscape

Stellenbosch itself offers more than just wine estates. The town’s oak-lined streets, the Eerste River, and the surrounding mountain passes all provide portrait locations that complement a venue-based wedding. I often take couples into the vineyards during golden hour — the rows of vines create natural leading lines, and the mountain backdrop changes colour as the sun drops. Why Winelands Venues Photograph So Well

Three things make the Cape Winelands exceptional for wedding photography:

  • Natural variety. Within a single venue, you get vineyards, gardens, mountain views, and architectural details — enough variety for a full portrait session without leaving the property.
  • Consistent light. The Western Cape’s Mediterranean climate means predictable golden hours and clear skies for much of the year. Summer weddings benefit from long evenings; winter weddings get dramatic clouds and soft, diffused light.
  • Character. Every estate has a story — a 300-year-old homestead, a family-run cellar, a contemporary art collection. That character shows in the photographs and gives each gallery its own identity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Cape Winelands venue is best for wedding photography?

It depends on your style. Montpellier de Tulbagh offers classic Cape Dutch elegance, with a manor house dating back to the 1700s, whitewashed walls and an oak-lined avenue. Saronsberg has a contemporary edge, combining a working wine cellar with an art gallery whose reception hall makes an unusual, photogenic backdrop. Eureka provides intimate rusticity, with a ceremony garden under old oaks and a reception space of exposed brick and wooden beams. Nooitgedacht, in the Stellenbosch hills, offers variety: vineyard rows for couple portraits, mountain views from the ceremony lawn and a warm, timber-framed reception hall. Riekert Cloete Photography has photographed at more than 30 wine estates and can recommend options based on your guest count, budget and aesthetic preferences.

What time of year is best for a winelands wedding?

October through April gives the best weather and the longest evenings. January and February are peak season with the most consistent light. Winter weddings (June to August) are quieter and more affordable, with dramatic mountain clouds and green vineyards. Some estates have their own seasonal advantages: Tulbagh’s microclimate means warm, still evenings with dramatic mountain light, and at Nooitgedacht the golden hour, with the sun setting behind the mountains, is exceptional. Whatever the season, Riekert Cloete Photography plans the timeline around the light, so the couple portraits happen in the best window of the evening. Tell me your venue and date and I can advise how the light will fall on the day.

How far are the winelands from Cape Town?

Stellenbosch is 45 minutes from central Cape Town, Franschhoek is about an hour and Tulbagh is roughly 90 minutes. Most guests drive or arrange shared transport, and many couples book accommodation at or near the venue for a weekend celebration. Tulbagh shows how distance becomes part of the appeal: it is far enough to feel like a destination and close enough for a day trip. For the photography, distance matters mostly for planning. Riekert Cloete Photography allows for the drive on the wedding morning, and your timeline should allow for guests travelling if the ceremony and reception are in different places. Tell me the venue and I can help you think through the timings for the day.

Do you travel to winelands venues outside Cape Town?

Yes. Riekert Cloete Photography regularly photographs weddings across the Western Cape, from Stellenbosch and Franschhoek to Tulbagh, the Overberg and the Garden Route. For my standard wedding packages of 6 hours or longer, the first 200 km of round-trip travel is included, and travel beyond that is charged at R5 per km. You can see the details on my pricing page. The winelands venues in this guide are all within about an hour and a half of Cape Town, but the same approach applies further afield: I confirm the venue, the ceremony spot and the timeline with you beforehand, and I scout the best spots before the wedding day. If your venue is not on this page, there is a good chance I know it, because I have photographed at more than 30 wine estates since 2004.

Can we do couple portraits in the vineyards?

Absolutely. Vineyard portraits are a signature feature of winelands weddings. The rows of vines create natural leading lines, and the mountain backdrop changes colour during golden hour. At Nooitgedacht the vineyard rows are a natural setting for couple portraits, and at one summer wedding the late-afternoon light caught the vineyards behind the ceremony lawn. I plan 30 to 45 minutes for couple portraits and always scout the best spots before the wedding day, so we know where to go when the light is right. Each estate offers something different, from the whitewashed walls and oak-lined avenue at Montpellier de Tulbagh to the contemporary lines at Saronsberg.
