The Spec Comes First

Every agency is different. Some want clean white backgrounds with minimal makeup. Some want natural light and styled clothing. Some want full-length. Some want tight crops from the shoulder. The requirements change by agency, by category, and sometimes by role.

This is the single most important thing to understand before booking acting or model headshots: what you think the agency wants and what they actually want are often not the same thing.

Before you book: Contact your agent or casting director and get their exact specifications in writing. Background, clothing, makeup, crop, colour or black and white — get it all. Then send it to me and we'll shoot to that brief.

This is for:

  • Aspiring actors submitting to casting agencies
  • Working actors whose current shots are out of date or off-brief
  • Models applying to agencies or updating their book
  • Performers putting together composite cards

How It Works

Step 1 — Get the Brief from Your Agent

Before you book, contact your agent or casting director and ask for their exact specifications. What background? What clothing? Makeup or no makeup? Full length, half length, or headshot crop? Colour or black and white? Get it in writing, then send it to me.

Step 2 — We Match the Brief

Once I have the agency spec, the shoot is built around it. I don't impose a house style on these sessions — the agency has requirements and we meet them. The shoot is directed by the brief.

Step 3 — Your Images, Ready to Submit

You'll receive your edited images via an online gallery, formatted and cropped to spec and ready to submit to the agency or casting director. If you need a composite card, we can discuss this as part of your booking.

Additional edited images: R150 per image on any tier. The right tier depends on your brief. If the agency wants a single clean headshot on a white background, Tier 1 is enough. If the brief calls for multiple looks and settings, Tier 2 or higher gives you that range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need to get the brief from my agent before booking?

Yes. Agency requirements vary significantly and getting the wrong shots means reshooting. The five minutes it takes to ask your agent for specs is always worth it.

What if I'm approaching agencies for the first time and don't have an agent yet?

Research the agencies you're targeting and look at the headshots of people already on their books — that's a reasonable starting point for a brief. Come to the shoot with as much direction as you can and I'll work with what you've got.

Can you help with posing and direction during the shoot?

Yes. I direct throughout the session. You don't need to know how to model — that's my job.

What about hair and makeup?

Follow the agency brief — some want fully styled looks, others want minimal or no makeup. If you need a professional HMUA, I can recommend Iza Cloete (izacloete.co.za) — she works regularly with photography clients and knows how to prepare for camera.

Do you do composite cards?

Yes. If your agency requires a comp card, mention this when you book and we'll build the session to give you the range of shots needed for it.

How quickly do I receive my images?

Edited images are typically delivered within five to seven business days via an online gallery.
