Jurgens and Jolanda Hanekom had their truly South African wedding at De Uijlenes just outside Gansbaai in the Overberg. The two of them are so full of life and stories and with them around life is not boring for one second!
They share the same “strange sense of humour” and according to them sometimes only they get each other’s jokes.
It was great to be back at De Uijlenes and meet-up with Flippie and Staci (Owners and managers of the venue). Always great to work alongside such professionals!
How did you meet?
Jurgens and I met back in December 2005 in Stilbay at the most horrible and famous Julie’s Baai camp ground. The camp grounds had no electricity and the showers were all outdoors ones. A friend and I were just cleaning of our feet at the showers when a few boys carried their chairs to the shower areas and started rating girls out loudly. Jurgens saw what the boys were doing and “politely” told them to stop doing it. It was love at first sight. We spent new years eve together and he asked met to be his girlfriend. I immediately said yes! I was going into my matric year in Worcester and he was 21 and was working at a Cellar in Durbanville. So our long distance relationship started. We saw each other every weekend for about 3 months and suddenly I just stopped hearing from him. After a week I felt it was safe to say that we were not dating anymore….
We lost contact completely for a few years and eventually became friends on FB. We were both pretty much always in a relationship and one day when I saw his relationship status changed on FB I knew: it was NOW or never. I was struggling to figure out what excuse I could use to start up a conversation when I remembered that a week ago he posted a picture of his dog at the vet which hurt it’s leg. He did post an update later saying everything is fine but I pretended that I missed that part. I sent him a message asking how his dog was doing…A few seconds later he replied and from then onwards we spoke every day from waking up to going to sleep.
Coincidentally a mutual friend of ours’ birthday was coming up and my nerves were shattered thinking about seeing him in real life for the first time in almost 8 years. My friends and I got all dressed up and headed to Speakeasy in Durbanville. I remember us walking to the table to join our other friends and then I saw him standing underneath that BIG tree and my legs went numb and my stomach filled up with butterflies. It took a while for him to warm up and gather the courage to greet me, it seems like the butterflies were contagious. We stayed up until 4 o’clock that morning talking. A friend and I only planned to be there for the Friday night and ended up staying the whole weekend for obvious reasons.
The rest was history.
6 months later he had already bought the ring and a further 3 months later we were engaged. He had a beautiful proposal planned in the mountains in Riviersonderend where he grew up, complete with a friend to take pictures. But when we were driving through the mountains he saw that a fire had damaged the whole area so he changed his mind. A few hours later in Rooi Els Pass with the ocean in the background, he went down on one knee and presented me with the most beautiful ring I had ever seen. he couldn’t get a word out and his bottom lip just shivered until I said yes.
How would you describe your wedding?
A dream come true! I have the privilege and honour of being married to a man who allowed me to organise our wedding the way I wanted to with only ONE simple request-NOTHING pink. We decided right from the start that we wanted a BIG party surrounded by all our friends and family to witness us making a lifelong promise to each other to always love and look after each other.
We chose our venue because it had the most beautiful forest area for the ceremony and a gorgeous old barn made from “koffie klip” for the reception. Standing in that forest hearing the wind through the many trees and a stream far away in the background it was almost like you could feel God’s presence.
For two straight days, it was raining cats and dogs in Gansbaai and when I woke up on the morning of our wedding it was the most beautiful sunny day. The morning of our wedding went by in what felt like only an hour. I am a very emotional person and it doesn’t take a lot to make me cry. But I told myself I wasn’t going to cry because if I started I wasn’t sure if I would be able to stop. When I came down the aisle to the tune of an acoustic version of “Can’t help falling in love” and saw my future husband wiping away a tear it took every ounce of my being to not start crying too. We had the most beautiful ceremony with a sermon tailor made for our personalities and the environment we were in. The reverend used the words “God’s cathedral” to describe our ceremony area and I couldn’t think of a better way to describe it.
After the pre-drinks and our couple’s shoot, we headed to the reception where my breath was once again taken away by how amazing the reception hall looked. We were blessed with the most wonderful family and service providers who went out of their way to give us the wedding that we could only dream of.
Our wedding was the best day of our lives. It’s probably a cliché to say that but it truly was. You think you cant love someone more that you already do…then comes your wedding day and you feel your heart bursting at the seams and overflowing with love.
You can’t imagine all the emotions you manage to fit into one day. Joy, happiness, pride, surprise, patience, amusement and above all…LOVE.
Something that really stood out about your wedding? (Maybe a surprise, or challenge?)
Everything about our wedding was super special to us but we LOVED a surprise our friends had prepared for us. Jurgens and I attended two rival schools and before all our speeches concluded my friends (all girls) performed a creed from our school days which was followed by a counter creed from Jurgens’s friends. (all boys) It was very special and we were completely surprised by the performance.
We were also privileged to have one of our best friends sing at our ceremony which was also very special!
