Elopement Weddings in Cape Town — Kristian & Paula’s Hout Bay Beach Ceremony

Updated 27 October 2026

Cape Town is one of the best elopement destinations in the world. White-sand beaches, mountain backdrops, year-round golden light, and no minimum guest requirement at most venues make it ideal for couples who want an intimate ceremony without the logistics of a large wedding. Over 22 years I’ve photographed elopements from Hout Bay to Chapman’s Peak, and every one reminds me why couples fly halfway around the world to say their vows here.

Kristian and Paula did exactly that — an intimate beach elopement in Hout Bay with the Twelve Apostles mountain range behind them and the Atlantic Ocean at their feet. No guest list, no seating chart, no stress. Just two people, a beach, and a promise. Here’s how their day unfolded.

Getting Ready at the Guest House

Kristian and Paula stayed at a guest house in Hout Bay the night before their elopement. The morning was quiet and unhurried — no bridal party to coordinate, no timeline pressure, no fleet of cars to arrange. Paula got ready at her own pace while the Atlantic light poured through the windows.

These unscripted, pressure-free moments produce some of the most genuine images of the day. Without a room full of bridesmaids and a hair-and-makeup team, the getting-ready session feels personal and calm. That’s the whole point of eloping — the day belongs entirely to the couple.

The Walk to the Beach

From the guest house, it was a short walk down to the beach in Hout Bay. The Twelve Apostles rose behind them, Sentinel Peak framed the harbour, and the sand was almost empty. An elopement in Cape Town gives you access to locations that would be impossible to book for a 150-person wedding.

The Ceremony on the Sand

There’s something about exchanging vows on a beach with no one watching except the photographer and the ocean. Kristian and Paula’s ceremony was simple, emotional, and completely theirs. No microphone, no aisle, no choreography — just the two of them standing barefoot on the sand.

I position myself where the light falls on the couple’s faces and move quietly around the ceremony. With elopements, there’s no second shooter and no formal shot list — the entire session is candid. The images feel real because they are.

Couple Portraits Along the Shore

After the ceremony, Kristian and Paula had the entire beach to themselves. We spent about 45 minutes walking along the shore, climbing onto rocks, and letting the late-afternoon light do its work. I keep direction minimal during couple sessions — a suggestion of where to walk, where to look, and then I let the moment happen.

The Western Cape coastline offers a different backdrop every 50 metres — rock pools, sandy dunes, kelp-strewn shoreline, dramatic cliff faces. An elopement portrait session here produces the kind of variety that usually requires multiple locations.

Golden Hour and Sunset

The golden hour in Cape Town is worth planning your entire elopement around. In summer, the sun drops slowly over the Atlantic, painting the mountains orange and the ocean gold. In winter, the light is softer and lower — equally beautiful, just different. Kristian and Paula’s elopement fell perfectly into that window.

Why Cape Town Is Perfect for Elopements

Cape Town consistently ranks among the top elopement destinations in the world, and for good reason. The city offers a combination that’s hard to find anywhere else: dramatic natural scenery, a mild climate that allows outdoor ceremonies year-round, world-class accommodation, and significantly lower costs than equivalent destinations in Europe or North America.

Popular elopement locations in and around Cape Town include:

  • Hout Bay Beach — sheltered bay with Twelve Apostles backdrop (like Kristian & Paula’s ceremony)
  • Chapman’s Peak — dramatic cliff-top views over the Atlantic
  • Camps Bay — white sand with the Twelve Apostles directly behind
  • Constantia wine estates — vineyard gardens with mountain views
  • Cape Point — wild, windswept coastline where the oceans meet
  • Franschhoek — wine country with a quieter, European feel

For international couples, South Africa’s favourable exchange rate means an elopement with a professional photographer, boutique accommodation, and a celebration dinner can cost less than a registry office wedding in London or New York. How to Plan a Cape Town Elopement

An elopement is simpler than a traditional wedding, but it still benefits from planning — especially if you’re travelling from overseas. Here’s what I recommend based on 22 years of experience:

  1. Choose your season. November to March gives the longest daylight and warmest weather. April to October is cooler but offers softer light and fewer tourists at beach locations.
  2. Book a photographer early. Good Cape Town wedding photographers book out months in advance, especially during peak season (December–February).
  3. Pick a location that matches your style. Beach, mountain, vineyard, urban — each has a different feel. I can recommend locations based on the time of day and the look you want.
  4. Sort legal requirements. South Africa requires a marriage officer for a legally binding ceremony. Many couples do the legal paperwork at home and have a symbolic ceremony here.
  5. Plan around the light. Late afternoon (3–5 pm in summer, 2–4 pm in winter) gives the best portrait light. Build your day backwards from sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an elopement photographer cost in Cape Town?

My elopement packages start at R6,000 for 2 hours of coverage, with a minimum of 200 professionally edited images, and R9,000 for 3 hours, with a minimum of 300 images. Additional hours are R3,000 per hour. The price depends on how long you need me and what you want at the end of it: a short beach ceremony with portraits along the shore needs less time than an elopement that moves between locations, and a longer session produces more images. With an elopement there is no second shooter and no formal shot list, so the whole session is candid. Riekert Cloete Photography also keeps direction minimal during couple portraits, with a suggestion of where to walk and where to look, and then lets the moment happen. What is the best time of year for a Cape Town elopement?

November to March offers the longest daylight and the warmest temperatures, which is ideal for beach ceremonies. April and October are shoulder months with beautiful light and fewer crowds. Even winter (June to August) works well if you choose a sheltered location, and the dramatic skies can make for incredible photographs. The light is the real planning tool: golden hour in Cape Town is worth planning your entire elopement around. In summer the sun drops slowly over the Atlantic, painting the mountains orange and the ocean gold, while in winter the light is softer and lower, equally beautiful but different. Riekert Cloete Photography can help you choose the season and the time of day that suits the style you want, so get in touch with your dates and ideas.

Do we need a marriage officer for an elopement in South Africa?

Yes, for a legally binding ceremony in South Africa you need a registered marriage officer. Many international couples choose to do the legal paperwork in their home country and have a symbolic ceremony in Cape Town, which gives you complete freedom over the location and the format. That freedom is part of why an elopement works so well here: you can choose a beach, a wine estate or a mountain viewpoint, and with no guest list there is no seating chart and no stress. For Kristian and Paula’s ceremony in Hout Bay there was no microphone, no aisle and no choreography, just two people on the sand. Riekert Cloete Photography photographs the ceremony whichever route you take, so tell me which you have chosen and when it will happen.

How many photos will we receive from an elopement?

I deliver a minimum of 200 professionally edited images for a 2-hour elopement package and a minimum of 300 for a 3-hour package, which is about 100 images per hour of coverage. Longer sessions with multiple locations produce more. Every image is colour-corrected and exposure-balanced, with no batch presets, so the gallery looks natural rather than overly processed. Because an elopement is candid from start to finish, with no formal shot list, the images cover the whole story: getting ready, the walk to the ceremony, the vows and the portraits afterwards. For Kristian and Paula that included about 45 minutes of couple portraits along the shore. Riekert Cloete Photography delivers the full edited gallery digitally within 2 weeks, and you can find more detail on deliverables and turnaround times on the wedding FAQ page.

Can you recommend elopement venues in Cape Town?

I’ve photographed elopements at dozens of locations across the Western Cape, from Hout Bay and Camps Bay to wine estates in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Hout Bay Beach is a sheltered bay with the Twelve Apostles as a backdrop, which is where Kristian and Paula said their vows, and the Western Cape coastline offers a different backdrop every 50 metres, from rock pools and sandy dunes to dramatic cliff faces. An elopement also gives you access to places that would be impossible to book for a 150-person wedding. Get in touch with Riekert Cloete Photography and I will recommend locations based on the season, the time of day and the style you are after.
