Top Wedding Moments — A Photographer’s Favourites After 22 Years

Updated 27 October 2026

Every wedding has a rhythm: the quiet nerves of the morning, the ceremony’s emotion, the portraits’ intimacy, and the reception’s energy. After photographing more than 100 weddings across Cape Town and the Western Cape, certain moments stand out — not because they are the most dramatic, but because they are the most real. These are the wedding moments I look forward to capturing every time, and the ones couples tell me they return to most in their galleries.

The Outdoor Ceremony

Outdoor wedding ceremony in Cape Town with mountain backdrop

An outdoor ceremony in the Western Cape is something no indoor venue can replicate. The mountains behind the couple, the wind catching a veil, the late-afternoon light warming everything gold — these are the elements that turn a wedding photograph into something that stops you mid-scroll.

The best outdoor ceremonies I’ve photographed share one thing: natural light doing the heavy lifting. Venues like Molenvliet, Lourensford, and the West Coast beach venues offer light that no flash can match. I position myself to shoot with the light behind me, so it falls on the couple’s faces — but I also look for backlit moments where the sun turns everything into a silhouette. Both approaches tell different parts of the same story.

Bridal Portraits — The Quiet Moments

The bridal portrait session is the part of the day that most brides don’t realise they’ll love until they see the images. It’s a pause — five to ten minutes of quiet between the bustle of getting ready and the ceremony’s nerves. The bride stands in good light, the dress falls properly, and for a moment everything is still.

I keep direction minimal during bridal portraits. A small adjustment to the angle of the chin, a turn towards the window light, a breath to relax the shoulders. The goal is a photograph that looks like the bride, not like someone posing for a photograph. The most powerful bridal portraits feel candid even when they’re gently guided.

Sunset and Golden Hour — The Landscape Shots

Sunset wedding portrait with dramatic Cape Town landscape

Cape Town’s golden hour is in a category of its own. The light drops behind Table Mountain or the Atlantic, and for twenty minutes everything glows. This is the window I plan the couple’s portrait session around, and it consistently produces the images that end up on walls.

What makes Cape Town special for sunset portraits isn’t just the light — it’s the landscape. Mountains, vineyards, coastline, and fynbos all sit within an hour’s drive. A sunset at Hout Bay looks nothing like a sunset at Babylonstoren, and that variety means no two wedding galleries look the same. I scout portrait locations before every wedding so we can move quickly when the light peaks.

Nighttime Silhouettes

After the sun sets, the photography doesn’t stop — it shifts. Nighttime silhouettes are some of the most dramatic images in any wedding gallery. A single off-camera flash behind the couple, their shapes outlined against the night sky, and the result is an image that looks like it belongs in a magazine.

The technique is simple, but the timing is everything. The ten to fifteen minutes after the last light fades — when the sky still holds colour but the ground is dark — is the sweet spot. I look for clean horizons, interesting shapes (archways, trees, venue structures), and a couple willing to step outside for three minutes between courses. Those three minutes produce some of the most memorable images of the entire day.

Laughter and Unscripted Joy

Candid laughter moment between bride and groom at wedding

The moments that couples cherish most are rarely the posed ones. A genuine laugh during the ceremony, a father trying not to cry, bridesmaids rushing to fix a wardrobe malfunction — these are the photographs that tell the real story of the day.

Capturing candid moments isn’t about luck. It’s about anticipation and positioning. After 22 years, I know when the laugh is coming — during the vows when someone stumbles on a word, during the speech when the best man tells that story, during the first dance when the groom steps on the bride’s foot. Being in the right place at the right time is a skill built over hundreds of weddings, and it’s the difference between getting the moment and missing it.

The Details That Took Months to Plan

Couples spend months choosing the stationery, the flowers, the table settings, the shoes, the rings. These details deserve to be documented, and they photograph best in the quiet before the guests arrive — when the tables are set, the flowers are fresh, and everything is exactly as the planner intended.

I arrive early specifically for detail shots. The ring on the invitation, the shoes beside the bouquet, the hand-lettered place cards — these images round out the story and give context to the people photographs. They’re also the images that wedding planners and venues use in their own marketing, which is a sign that they matter. See more examples in my wedding portfolio.

Why These Moments Matter

A wedding album isn’t a chronological record — it’s a story. The moments listed here are the chapters that give that story its shape: the anticipation, the emotion, the beauty, the celebration, and the quiet in between. A photographer who knows how to capture all of them gives you a gallery that feels complete, not just a collection of pretty pictures.

The difference between an experienced wedding photographer and a beginner isn’t equipment or editing style — it’s knowing which moments matter and being ready when they happen. That readiness comes from years of practice, and it’s what I bring to every wedding I photograph. For more on how I approach a wedding day, read A Day in the Life of a Wedding Photographer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most important moments to photograph at a wedding?

The ceremony (vows, first kiss, recessional), the couple’s portraits during golden hour, candid reactions during speeches, the first dance and the bridal preparation are the five moments couples value most. A skilled photographer captures all of them without missing any. Some of the most powerful images are quiet ones: the bridal portrait session is a pause of five to ten minutes between the bustle of getting ready and the ceremony’s nerves, and an outdoor ceremony with natural light doing the heavy lifting can turn a wedding photograph into something that stops you mid-scroll. Riekert Cloete Photography plans the day so none of these moments is rushed. Check my wedding FAQ for more details.

How do you capture nighttime silhouette photos?

I use a single off-camera flash placed behind the couple, with the sky as a backdrop. The key is timing: the ten to fifteen minutes after sunset when the sky still holds colour. It takes about three minutes and produces some of the most dramatic images in any gallery. Because the window is short, it has to be planned into the evening in advance, so that the couple can step outside quickly once the sun has gone down and the sky is still glowing. Riekert Cloete Photography scouts portrait locations before every wedding, so that we can move quickly and be in position when the light peaks.

What time of day is best for wedding portraits?

The hour before sunset, golden hour, produces the warmest, most flattering light. In Cape Town the time moves with the season, because sunset falls much later in summer than in winter, so I confirm the exact window from your wedding date. I plan the portrait session around this window for every wedding. Cape Town’s golden hour is in a category of its own: the light drops behind Table Mountain or the Atlantic and for twenty minutes everything glows, which consistently produces the images that end up on walls. Mountains, vineyards, coastline and fynbos all sit within an hour’s drive, so a sunset at Hout Bay looks nothing like one at Babylonstoren. Read more in my wedding photography tips.

Do you photograph the small details like rings and flowers?

Yes. I arrive early specifically for detail shots: rings, shoes, stationery, table settings and bouquets. These images give context to the story and are often among the couple’s favourites. They are usually the first images I shoot, while the room is still tidy, so having everything gathered in one spot before I arrive makes a real difference. A small tray or table near a window works perfectly, and laying the items out the night before means nothing gets forgotten on the morning. Riekert Cloete Photography also photographs the table settings, so it helps to tell me what has been prepared. Bridal room preparation tips can help you set up these details beautifully.

How many wedding photos will I receive?

A wedding gallery from Riekert Cloete Photography typically contains about 100 individually edited images for every hour of coverage, so a 6-hour package yields 600 or more and a 9-hour package 900 or more. I cull from 3,000 to 5,000 raw shots to deliver only the strongest photographs, so the gallery is a selection rather than a dump of everything captured. The number follows the hours of coverage you book, so a longer day with a long ceremony, large family groups, golden-hour portraits and a lively reception gives more time for strong frames. Riekert Cloete Photography edits each delivered image individually. Get in touch to discuss your wedding day plans, and tell me how many hours of coverage you have in mind so I can give you a realistic expectation.
