Honest opinion: group photos don't feel special the day after the wedding — but ten, twenty, thirty years down the line they become some of the most valuable photographs of the whole day. So we do them, and we do them properly. The big one with all the guests usually happens straight after the ceremony while the congratulations are still flowing (venue-depending — we settle that in the consultation before your wedding); the family combinations come during pre-drinks.

Your homework is one list: every combination you want, printed in two or three copies. Then appoint a traffic officer — a brother, a sister, a bridesmaid, someone who actually knows everybody, because I don't. They round up the sheep and I shoot fast: when everyone works together it's literally a minute per photo, so fifteen combinations means fifteen minutes. We always start small and build — the two of you with parents, then siblings, then their partners and kids, then grandparents and the extended family, ending on the biggest group.

And when we slip away for the couple shoot afterwards, the entourage joins us for the first ten minutes.
